According to reports from Ethiopia, the government has enlisted the services of software company IOHK to launch the country’s largest blockchain development to date. As part of the agreement, the creator of the Cardano protocol will be responsible for creating a national blockchain-based identification system for students and faculty.
Highly valued initiative
According to the government, more than five million Ethiopian students will initially participate in the project. Meanwhile, this bond between the two parties is welcomed by both the Ethiopian government and the IOHK. For example, Education Minister Getahun Mekuria in his statement on the agreement praised the project and said it would make education in the country more dynamic. The minister added:
We believe blockchain offers a significant opportunity to end digital exclusion and improve access to higher education and employment.
On his part, IOHK Africa’s Director of Operations, John O’Connor, stated that this deployment could help create the spark that ignites the spark of innovative blockchain on the African continent.
The transformation of blockchain-based education in Ethiopia is an important step in IOHK’s mission to provide economic identity and employment, as well as social and financial services to those who are digitally inaccessible, O’Connor said.
However, according to a report, this project could eventually expand to universities, where degrees are also digitally validated on the Cardano blockchain. This feature allows employers to easily verify the authenticity of candidates’ educational documents.
At the same time, the report states that Ethiopia should promote wider use of IOHK’s Atala products, such as. For example, the PRISM platform. On the other hand, IOHK also reveals that talks are already underway to introduce a blockchain-based digital transport ticketing system in Addis Ababa.
