Joseph O’Connor, also known as PlugWalkJoe on the internet, was charged with a slew of offenses stemming from a May 2019 bitcoin exchange breach. He is accused of fleeing with $784,00 in digital assets during the incident.
Authorities think O’Connor used SIM swap attacks (a kind of fraud in which two-factor authentication phone calls and text messages are diverted to a device controlled by the fraudster) on three executives at an unknown cryptocurrency firm to get access to their organization’s systems. O’Connor may have then transferred over 7 BTC, 407 ETH, 6363 LTC, and 770 BCH from the corporation’s wallets to wallets under his control.
The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York filed the indictment, which is recognized for prosecuting high-profile financial crimes. The FBI investigated the case, which was assigned to Judge Richard Berman. O’Connor has been charged with conspiracy to hack computers, conspiracy to conduct wire fraud, conspiracy to launder money, and aggravated identity theft. The charge of identity theft has a required minimum term of two years in prison, which must be served concurrently with any other sentence.
O’Connor is currently fighting extradition to the United States from Spain, where he was arrested in July on charges related to the 2020 Twitter hack, in which he is accused of gaining control of 130 different prominent Twitter accounts, including those of Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Apple, and Kanye West. The perpetrators utilized these accounts to promote a cryptocurrency fraud before fleeing with around $110,000 in illegal proceeds.
